At 7:30 am we ate our bagels at home. At 9:40 am we are pictured at top of Mountain High. Yes, this is all the same day! This resort is gorgeous and so close to Los Angeles! I’ve been skiing California since I was a junior high kid. And it is my true pleasure to have teens who love to ski. This was their first trip to Wrightwood.

Mountain High is Southern California’s closest winter resort with no mountain driving. Located just an hour and a half from L.A. and Orange County, you won’t find an easier drive to the mountains anywhere. If you plan for off-season you won’t need chains, but when the snow is in full force you will definitely need them to get to the resort.

It is so close, you can literally ski part of the day and get back to Santa Monica for a stroll on the beach all in one day. Or, you can rent a quaint rustic cabin from HomeAway.com and have mini two-day ski getaway.

Did you know #mthigh has 3 resorts? Southern California is known for its gorgeous weather and sprawling beaches. But as far back as the 1920s, winter enthusiasts were making their way up Highway 2 to bask in its mountains. The San Gabriel mountains to be exact. And in 1924 Big Pines park opened very near to what is now known as Mountain High’s West Resort with sledding, ice skating, and a lodge catering to Hollywoods elite. Yes, the snow made at the resort is real! They are pretty famous for their snow-making. That’s why so many locals head up there to get perfect conditions regardless of the weather. They are one hard working team. All day long and around the clock, you see staff attending to guests and diligently maintaining all aspects of the mountain.

The highlight of my day was skiing down Vertigo (crazy fun double black). I stopped and took a moment to soak in the beauty of this chair lift sitting silently with icicles hanging from it, as the serene blue sky hovered above. That’s just how stunning this place is. If you need a day off work, or are visiting LA this Winter, you must take a short drive to Mountain High. Tell them I say, “Hi.”
