Edit From Your iPhone To Create Living Media – with ptch app
Not everyone is comfortable looking at themselves in pictures or on video. Most of the time, we cringe when we see ourselves and say, “Yikes, is that how I look?” And if you’re a parent, chances are you are taking all the family photos and probably aren’t in many! Right? But what will your kids think in 20 years when you hand down all your hard drives, flash drives and cloud passwords to them as keepsakes? You most certainly don’t want them to say you weren’t around. It’s important for our kids to see us with them interacting, laughing, smiling, and loving them they way we do. They will know ‘our love’ for them forever, but can you imagine how they’ll feel when they show their own kids how grandma was ‘way back when.’ Memories are in our heads, but nothing can replace the emotional visual and true sound of life. It’s the whole reason we buy cameras and Handycams — to keep memories… So don’t you think it’s high time to get in some of those pics and ask someone to capture you and what you’re doing? It may feel contrived or un-natural, but once you set up the scene a few times, it’s actually fun! Hand your Handycam or iPhone over to the kids. Teach them how to record. Get your game on! Do skits and record funny jokes and trendy dance moves with your kids. Watch it back and encourage your kids to be creative and shoot other fun things. Or set up silly photo scenarios with their favorite toys or get them in action with the pets. Many of you probably don’t know what to do with all your videos… I found an amazing iPhone app www.ptch.com that edits your videos for you on you smart phone! Self-automated editing at it’s best. Load your clips from your phone, pick your music and voila! A short edited masterpiece in minutes! And they let you use iTunes legally. I use this Ptch app so frequently both in my business and at home that I’m officially working with them on spreading the word about this iPhone gem – at Ptch they call me Chief Media Mom! So please download the app and be sure to show us your video masterpieces! Check out my Ptch page!

What Mom Really Wants is More Time. For Herself.
So much to do and so little time. Ain’t that the truth. Although we moms do love our fuzzy slippers and great Sunday brunches, sometimes all we need it something as simple as just a little time alone. If I had the full day to myself, I’d go buy a new pair of sunglasses, get my toes painted, join a friend for lunch and maybe buy a pair of cool shoes. What would you do if you had a full day to yourself?
The art of living is setting realistic expectations that you can actually achieve
A simple easy video blogging tip to keep your viewers coming back

There is no greatness without passion
“There is no greatness without a passion to be great, whether it’s the aspiration of an athlete or an artist, a scientist, a parent, or a businessperson.”
– Anthony Robbins
You are in charge of your own destiny. No one can take your passion, drive and creativity from you. You can make it through ups and downs, but in the end, you are your ideas – only you can make them happen. Do it. Be it. Own it. You’ve got my full support. Now go out and show the world what you’ve got.
Mud and Slop: Why Nature Play is Good for Kids
Did you know that by providing your child the opportunity to play outdoors increases self-reliance and cooperation with others? It also reduces stress and acting out. Children are smarter, happier and healthier if they have time for unstructured play in the great outdoors. Rocks, sand, mud, twigs, water and tree stumps are all examples that make up a great outdoor play. Being outdoors is a simple pleasure. Outdoor play enhances child development. Children can label, classify and experiment with the elements of nature. The wonderment simply never ends. I see nature as a child’s sixth sense.
I’ve been a supporter of Biophilia (which is the love of the outdoors) for years, and I make efforts to provide natural play areas in my own back yard. My older son is a Mud King and my younger child is the Mud Prince. Everyday, all year round, you can find my boys sloshing, digging and creating in their custom mud pit. Ah, the life of a child…
Adventures in nature peak enthusiasms and joy — so let kids get down and dirty where they learn, live and play.

The Little Things.
All though I want time to stand still forever, I know it can’t. Maybe that’s why I’m so fond of my video and still camera. I simply can’t enough of watching my life unfold before me. My kids crawling, walking, hitting a baseball, skiing or becoming a cub scout. I snuggle with my pets and never want that moment to end either. I hear my kids shout, “Mama, I need you” and know one day it will just be, “I need you” or “hey mom.” No need for them to label me as Mama and Mommy anymore. The sweet smell and innocence of my kids keeps me grounded. Their tiny little bodies running around, the big eyes looking up at me asking questions. I will forever cherish my boys, my pets, and my life, as it is today. What are some of the things you cherish?
My Appearance on the Today Show – My 3rd point is below (which was not conveyed in segment)
I was on the Today Show (with the awesome Emily McKhann) and unfortunately my 3rd point was not made due to time constraints so I wanted to post it to complete my take on this site and the motivation behind it.
No mom intentionally posts “rage inducing” comments on her FB page, which is part of the subtitle of Blair’s new book. Her platform is not just for humor, the very name of her site is mean spirited and judgmental –let’s call a spade a spade, she takes mom’s posts with out permission, which are completely hijacked out of context from FB community, and will be publishing them for profit. Being a mom is a unique and mind boggling experience, and supporting each other can be done in many ways other than mockery.

.@TheGoToMom’s White House Interview w/ @VP Vice President Biden on Gun Violence via G+ & @PBS
It’s bone chilling to read this quote from medical examiner Wayne Carver about the some of the autopsies he did on little first graders, “The victims had three to 11 wounds a piece, and I only saw two of them with close-range shooting.” If this visual isn’t enough for one to help pass this gun violence legislation to protect innocent children, then I don’t know what will. This isn’t an issue of taking people’s guns away it’s about protecting children. You’re either on board with advocating for the god given rights of young children or you’re not. It’s time for society to come out of their self-focused fears and step up and do what’s right and the President’s plan to REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE is good step in protecting our children and our communities. I can say that I’m truly thrilled about Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) which will to provide funding for training to teachers on how to identify and help students who may have mental health issues. This proposal will launch of a national conversation to increase understanding about mental health issues happening. There is a clear stigma around mental health and it’s important that parents, schools and communities begin to recognize and support kids who need help. But where do we start? Please comment below. I’d love to hear from you.
Four Common Parenting Mistakes

Importance of Emotion coaching Young Kids
Empathy is the cornerstone of good parenting. Nothing feels worse than to behave badly with your child and then see them sweetly sleeping in their beds. With my method you don’t have all the guilt and regret and it makes parents and kids feel good. A child’s entire world is experienced and processed through an emotional filter. If we don’t take into consideration the impact of child’s emotional world then we miss a golden opportunity for strengthening their emotional intelligence. We can begin to emotion coach children at birth. Now that we know babies can experience depression as early as 6 months of age – we have to start dealing with children’s emotions very early on in their life. When we emotion coach kids, it makes time of discipline much more manageable, and what parents wouldn’t want that? Forget the timeouts, reward charts and old dated modes of discipline. Emotion coaching sharpens social intelligence. If you coach your kids they will be more resilient, play well with others and are physically healthier. Plus they don’t disengage from you during times of discipline, instead they actually stay connected with you. Emotion coached kids do the right thing when we’re not there. If you have a child that you have to be their emotion coach and I’ll show you how in the Go-To Mom’s Parents’ Guide to Emotion Coaching Young Children. It will teach the tools and techniques to make them a preschooler whisperer!

Sony internet with Google TV brings Families Together
As a social media mom I’m pretty excited about Sony’s new Internet Player with GoogleTV on it! I love tweeting during my favorite show, or updating Facebook® while using the picture in picture option. I can even resize the box and move it to any corner. Now this is an enhanced web experience because your favorite websites are on a grand scale with the Google Chrome™ browser that’s built for speed & simplicity – plus the graphics are amazing! There’s always something on. Download apps directly to your TV from the ever-expanding Google Play Store™. Choose from favorites like Netflix, Pandora or YouTube – see them on the big-screen, with HD resolution and advanced motion systems — The Google TV Discover app is pretty handy! It’s the easiest way to find and watch the best entertainment possible. Browse everything that’s broadcasting right now, and you can even see how much of the movie remains, whether it’s on live TV or available through services like Netflix. I can do all this with one remote featuring a full touchpad and backlit keyboard – or I can control the TV with an iPhone, android or tablet!
My Live G+ Vidcast with @SELFMagazine #13for13 A better You!
I am a MOM of Boy Scouts – and I have something to say.
As a child I spent a lot of time hanging out with my grandpa Lloyd who was flamboyantly gay. Although, he most likely would never have wanted to be a Boy Scout or Eagle Scout, I’m sure his more masculine and outdoorsy colleagues would have liked to. My sister’s mother is openly gay and has been all our lives. Does that mean she should lose her right to be a Girl Scout den leader? I mean, if she’s attracted for females, might she pose a risk to the girls? This notion I sarcastically speak of is crazy, biased and archaic. My son’s troop is led by a heterosexual woman so should we be fearful that since she likes males, she may be attracted to the boys in the troop? Seriously, if all you in favor of banning gays from this organization can dish out a conversation that MAKES NO SENSE, clearly you can answer my logical questions above. In my heart I do hope that the BSA make the change and embrace every man and boy who desires to be part of what they teach – preparedness, kindness, generosity, compassion, community, and reverence.
Post is dedicated to grandpa Lloyd, the most outstanding citizen, caring loving man I’ve ever known. We are fighting the fight I know you would be proud of. xxoo

How Do You Reclaim Balance, Motivation and Your True Self After Momhood?
Make a concerted effort to engage in “Mommy Cherishing” activities — How many times this month did you do something just for yourself? Did you take a nice long bubble bath, read a great book, or get your toe-nails painted fire engine red? Moms are happier and more mentally balanced when they can plan activities that fuel their passion for life.
Stop Competing With Other Women — A perfect mom is hard for anyone to bond with. We feel we can never live up to that type of mother so we shy away with intimidation from the so called, ‘perfect mom.’ However, a mother who is confident and a tad self-deprecating is alluring. She shows us her strengths as well as her weaknesses, which allows others to bond with her in a non-competitive way. The more women continue the cycle of female or mommy competition the less chances we have to build a universal female support system.
Ask for help when ever possible — It’s not easy asking for help. You may think just because you wanted to be a parent you have to rise to the occasion all the time. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help. Many people are willing to help. The key is to actually ask.
Simplify your life by doing less — Doing nothing, or being alone is really doing something. Never underestimate the power of mommy-decompression time. Just like sleeping serves as a restoration for the human body, doing nothing can do the same for moms. It’s okay to have nothing on your plate. The most common advice I give mommies is to cut out what is not necessary. Simplify, simplify, simplify. Less is more.
When you run an errand, tack on an extra half hour to do something fun – It’s okay to do Mommy-Cherishing activities when you have time off — So many errands are done out of necessity and tend to use up all the time we have off. I know moms don’t have time to grab a vanilla iced blended or flip through the pages of a cool magazine at the bookstore, but why not? We rightfully deserve it. It’s okay to add some fun to your day before you run your errands! The next time you have time off, tack on an extra forty-five minutes to do mommy-cherishing activities.
Complaining without action gets you nowhere. It’s your choice to either restore or accept your post-baby body — Women gain weight as they age; however it’s a mommy’s responsibility to maintain optimal health and good self-esteem. You can sit silently and envy the fit mommies or get moving and get some cardio and Pilates action going! You can take the path of least physical resistance and accept that life changes many things, which includes your figure.
Learn to take “Mommy Time Outs” when you’re angry or cranky — I’m better off yelling, “Mommy Needs A Time Out!” then taking it out on the family. However, that’s what happens to moms who don’t take a break. I don’t mean take a break and sit down for minute. I’m talking about taking several hours off of mommyhood or work to do something that brings back your vitality.
Quiet yourself at least once a day
Taking time for your self is essential for good mothering. No one really ever plans on being a martyr-mom. We all know that in the end that this type of mom will eventually burn out and her children may witness her unravel. Taking time off from chores, work and family can be very mommy enhancing.
A happy woman makes a happy mom.

Best Kept Secret in Canada! @BigWhite Resort Offers Champagne Powder & Amazing Family Skiing! via @TheGoToMom
It truly is the best reason to ski there… Or to take your family “It’s the snow!” I had the pleasure of traveling to B.C. to meet up with a fine group of mom bloggers Kim Marie of LuxuryTravelMom, Andrea Fellman of SavvySassyMoms and Claudia Laroye of TheTravellingMom – Big White Resort’s bountiful, dry powder is legendary and was awarded “Best Powder” by Ski Canada Magazine in 2008! As a family resort, they put a high premium on your safety and want to keep you happy while you enjoy the slopes. You will see the daily “Slow Zones” that make it easy for beginners and people that want to take it slow and also have Safety Tips for using the resort and helping you to watch out for any little hazards Mother Nature may put in your path. Having skied there, I can honestly say it is clearly the best Champagne Powder I’ve ever experienced. Wowza… It was so cool to get our very own knowledgeable Snow Hosts for a free mountain tour to unlock the secrets of Big White – they were so patient with us, you know how unruly mom bloggers can be! They put up with us stopping frequently to take pictures or to Tweet. With 18 on-mountain restaurants, cafes, delis, pubs and nightclubs, there is no shortage of places to relax or replenish your energy level when it’s time for a break. The #MomsOnSnow enjoyed luxurious lunch, drinks and delicious dinner at Kettle Valley Steak House, Carvers and after dinner ‘on-fire” coffee at The Gunbarrel Grill. To thoroughly enjoy the BC Okanagan Valley’s offerings, be sure to savour some famous local wines. Or you stay in and snuggle up with your family… Be sure and order your groceries and they’ll have them delivered to your chalet before you arrive.
Kids’ Centre at Big White Ski Resort
When all you want to do is get up on the mountain, you don’t want to be worrying about your kids. So why not drop them at a place where they will have the time of their lives, and you can ski or board all day long worry free! Ski Canada rates our centre as the “Best Resort Feature for Kids in Canada” and the UK’s London Daily Mail rated it one of the top five in the world! Big White is the ultimate kids’ playground, a fun and safe environment featuring wide open runs, perfect for learning new skills that can get your children up and around the resort.

Does Your Smile Reflect the Real You? My Invisalign Campaign and Personal Experience
We all want a confident smile and healthy teeth…. For ourselves and our children. I got Invisalign because my bottom teeth were over-crowded and were chipping and I wanted a nice smile. I was thrilled when Invisalign offered to cover my treatment to help correct my teeth. This video is sponsored in part by Invisalign and Invisalign Teen. It’s very true that busy parents are always on the lookout for the best products and solutions for their kids. When it comes to a decision as important as straightening your child’s teeth, it’s good to know you now have options –Metal braces are gradually being replaced by more advanced, subtle options that are an ideal fit for active, social lifestyles. I do a lot public speaking and when I’m on camera people can’t always tell if I’m wearing Invisalign! I will for sure have my boys wear Invisalign if they need teeth correction. No doubt.

Family Fun Traveling Places: Where Do You Like to Play?
I’ve skied many mountains in my life time and have come to adopt Deer Valley as my snowy home away from home. I don’t get to visit as much as I’d like but the terrain, atmosphere and hospitality is outstanding. During our stay we also got to interview Krista Parry, the founder of SnowMamas.com – a resource website for snow bound skiing moms and their kids.
Our first night we stayed at the beautiful and rustic Hotel Park City – a Ski haven for families who like to stay in beautifully appointed cottages. Our cottage had a Jacuzzi on our private deck, full living room with fireplace, master bedroom and great closets. Right outside our window was lake surrounded by puffy white snow. The ducks seemed to not mind swimming in the freezing water!
On our 2nd night we stayed at the new Montage Deer Valley. Wow. Just amazing! To see more of the Montage Deer Valley Resort, watch this show: “What Legacy Do You Want to Leave?”
As much as I’d like to say the skiing was my highlight of the trip, I have to be honest. The highlight (as I disclose my weakness) of the trip was what I coined, “the orgasmic donut” from The High West Distillery in Park City. As I walked into this garage looking establishment I immediately could smell whiskey in the air. I ordered their signature apple cider drink and wondered what the meal would taste like. One word, ‘phenomenal.’ I was surprised at how delicious all the food was. But yes, the crowning moment was dessert. On a small white plate was two Krispy Kreme donuts (Ithink they were double fried, seriously) innocently sitting there with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top with some carmel or cinnamon glaze dripping down the sides. After my first bite, I do believe I successfully replicated that hilarious scene from “When Harry Met Sally.” We were all cracking up. Who would of thought?
On the third night I had to pleasure of dinning out at “Seafood Buffet” with my sister. I must have eaten buckets of crab legs, mounds of chilled shrimp and buttery delicious scallops. I had no idea just how much seafood one could get in the mountains of Utah. But there it was calling my name. This was exactly what my body needed after a hard day of skiing and jumping moguls (tee hee). And of course all accompanied by a smooth glass of Fox Glove chardonnay.
It was my delight and pleasure to bring my little sister with me to shoot my shows because last year she was recovering from breast cancer. Our segment is called, “Mommy Hot Spots: Where Do You Like to Play?”
We’ve been skiing together ever since we were teens and this trip was so special because she was healthy enough toget on mountain and take an amazing ski lesson with me. Elyse was a our ski instructor from Deer Valley Resort. We learned a lot, despite the fact that Elyse told me to ski around the moguls not to jump them. I was trying to show off for my sissy, but ended up humbled and a much more smooth skier! Thanks Elyse!
How to Make Play Dough – Easy Recipe

It’s time to TWEET The Talk! Our day at CBS w/the women of The Talk
My side-kick, Beth B. from Techmamas.com and I spent the afternoon at CBS as guest audience members of the hit day time talk show The Talk. However, we were a part of the official ‘mom blogger’ guests who got the red carpet treatment and front row seats. I have to say that Beth and I have visited many talk shows and TV productions and must admit this by far was the most professional set up we’ve experienced! From the stage managers to the warm up guy, to the producers, hosts and content of the show – it was a kick-in the pants! After the live show we had the pleasure of having lunch with all The Talk hosts. They were relaxed and candid about everything they discussed with us. I was so impressed that even the executive producer hung out with us (so cool!). Watch the video to get a glimpse of our experience. Next time, I’ll be back with an interview from these great ladies! Oh, and don’t forget to #TweetTheTalk!
Northstar ski schools gets big thumbs up from @TheGoToMom
I took my co-host Beth Blecherman of Techmamas with me to Northstar California to Lake Tahoe! Which is the perfect place to play, relax and spend quality time with people you love. Gotta mention we were most impressed with Dial-a-Ride Resort Shuttle Service – who was at our door within minutes of a call! No need to bring your car at all! We made sure our little one’s were enrolled in the Northstar Kid’s Ski & Board School which included all the skill development and tricks our kids craved. Those who come to Northstar know what they’re looking for. Sometimes it’s adventure, sometimes it’s to learn, and sometimes it’s to be guided through an experience of a lifetime. When you’re here, you’ll find your experience to be the way it should be.
We were beyond impressed with Northstar’s Kid’s Ski + Board School for kids Ages 3 – 12. Our kids have been in many ski schools and this one had very patient and knowledgeable instructors. All our boys did the All Stars experience for 7- to 12-year-olds, which is an energetic lesson program for beginner through advanced ability levels – Plus, you may get to meet the cuddly and loveable mascot, Ripperoo. The mountain also offers Kids’ Private Lessons as well as state licensed Child Care for non-skiing children ages 2 – 6 at Minors’ Camp.
My chic powder blue ski wardrobe was provided by Fera Style. The perfect fit for the active mom/woman! Check them out! Thanks to Sony for providing us with waterproof cameras! The newest Sony HD Handycam is now waterproof and super flat so you can ski and swim with it!

Emotions Matter More Than You Think
The basis of good parenting is empathy. Emotions matter more than you think. Never deny or minimize your child’s experience. If you’d like your child to be physically healthy, do well in school, and have compassion for other acknowledge their feelings. Empathy by far is one of the greatest teaching tools, use it. Commit to better parenting.

How to Deal with Children Who Bite
Biting is one of the most difficult behaviors to deal with in young children. Children can break skin when they bite and cause an infection so you need to see biting behavior as very serious and intervene immediately. Biting is common among toddlers and can happen for many reasons. Sometimes toddlers have pent up energy or they are filled with excitement and they choose biting as a way to express it. Also it could be that they are teething and the biting feels good. Or they may like the strong reaction they get.

Sony Treats Mom Bloggers Like Super Models
Sony Electronics and I hosted a small, private event in San Diego to teach mom bloggers how to use the new Cyber-shot WX9. With advanced features like the low-light performance and Background Defocus mode for DSLR-like, blurred-background results, this compact camera amazes with incredible sophisticated photos that just beg to be framed or posted to a mom’s profile. Moms are attracted to this pocket camera because it can even shoot HD video clips and 3D photos. The event was a day of snap-happy moms for sure! The mom bloggers spent the afternoon with renowned celebrity photographer Brian Smith (www.BrianSmith.com) and enjoyed an exclusive photo session with Brian to update their social media profile pictures.
Social Media Moms Unplug in the Big Sky Country
There’s nothing more relaxing than relaxing in the river front taking in the beauty of Montana. I took my sidekick Beth, the founder of Techmamas.com, with me to film this episode for Sony. Little did we know that The Resort at Paws Up would be the next biggest love of our lives. It was more than eye candy it was heart melting. We will never forget how joyful it was to watch our children roam the land with their walkie talkies, riding horses, shooting bow and arrows and having an unforgettable chuck wagon dinner.
We filmed on this beautiful property to feature the newest cyber-shot HX 20V. This particular pocket sized camera has a 40x zoom lens which blew away my camera man, because I was able to photograph an eagle’s face with this tiny little camera. It’s hard to believe that Beth an I who are two very techie mamas could unwind and unplug for any period of time. We did it and we are so appreciative that we were able to experience the luxury of The Resort at Paws Up and capturing our memories on the new Sony Cyber-shot HX 20V.
Dancing with Mickey Mouse, Keynote Speaking and Eating at Epcot!
It was not only an amazing experience for me to attend the Disney Social Media Moms conference as a key note speaker, but it was such a warm and humbling experience as an attendee because Disney always wins my heart over. Even at a corporate event like this, the room was filled with love and admiration for families and children. Any time a character came into the room or a video was displayed about the creation of Disney, my eyes teared up. I now know whenever I am in a room of Disney promoters, I will need a handful of tissue to capture my emotional tears. It is such a delight for me to help moms and their blog presence via video. Having Sony there to run the Handycam contest was so thrilling because I was asked to speak on their behalf about how we use the camera at TheGoToMom.tv. After my official duties were done as a speaker, I jumped into comfy clothes and indulged myself with the many wonders of the world by going to Epcot. I was joined by my Canadian mom ambassadors, UrbanMommies and yoyomama. We giggled, we took pictures and we shared insights about our Disney experience together. I was so honored that Annmarie from yoyomama was able to grab my Handycam and capture me dancing with Mickey and Minnie at one of our dinners. She did such a great job and wasn’t even in my vlogging workshop! I want to thank the Disney World PR team in particular for always “getting it” and seeing social media moms as their #1 mouthpieces. And for always making us feel like princesses. As a social media mom, it is my honor to help preserve Walt Disney’s dream in letting everyone know that Disney World and Disneyland are “the happiest places on earth.”
How to Get Your Kids To Clean Up
Cleaning is not an intuitive skill. Although, at times I wonder if I was born with some rare Genetic Tiddyness gene! but there are some ways in which parents can begin to teach the value of cleanliness. Although children don’t need any encouragement to spread their toys about or to flick paint around, cleaning up takes a little coaxing, and this can be a lonely task for a social child and at times can feel like punishment or a never ending task. You may begin to see that your child wanting to help you clean. So be a tidy role model – that means you must model the behaviors you want to see in your child. Young children actually learn best through experience and not always through formal instruction.

The Go-To Mom Interviews Mariel Hemingway
It was a pleasure to head over to Mariel‘s home in Malibu to get a glimpse at how she lives. I cuddled with her white cat and pet her two doggies as the camera crew set up. I couldn’t wait to show her my new Sony Cyber-shot, as she is a healthy life style advocate and I knew she needed a camera to showcase her craft.
She says, “Creating a healthier body and mind allows us to do more and live a longer, more vibrant and meaningful life. It is my belief that the choices we make, the information we seek, and the food we eat are integral to our well-being.”
Mariel has written books about life, yoga, nutrition and well-being including a cookbook. She has created a company called Mariel’s Kitchen in order to share her passion for living a healthy, happy life. Through making positive, intentional choices about food, movement, home, and silence, she has found her center and balance.
Weapon and Superhero Play: Good or Bad?
I’m sure you’ve had those days were pirates or ninjas rule the roost! For many children, weapon play is one of the ways they can process their fears, feel safe, and experiment with self-defense.
This is a natural phase, and should come after 4 or 5 years of age. The discovery and lure toward pretend weapons is expected however, children under 4 should not be exposed to violent influences from their peers or the media. It is not advised to encourage this type of play with toddlers – they are simply too young to comprehend any of the concepts. As children grow older they begin to understand how weapons have played a part of our history. They may begin to ask questions about why people use guns and swords.

Binky patrol: Understanding your child’s love of the pacifier
If you think your kid is going to be taking their pacifier off to college with them, think again! Most children give up their pacifiers before they are three years old. As children grow older, peer pressure becomes more of a factor and may actually be all the incentive a child needs to let go of their treasured pacifier.
A pacifier provides a serene state of calm for infants and young children — and The American Academy of Pediatrics states that pacifier use can actually prevent SIDS –sucking on a pacifier forces the airway to stay open. Pacifier use is now recommended at nap time and bedtime throughout the first year of life. A Binky, or pacifier, is also a transitional object that helps relieve stress as children adjust to new situations.
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) Policy on Oral Habits, thumb sucking or the sucking on pacifiers is normal in infants and young children.
With my first son I took the paci away when he was nine months old, but he had a very calm temperament. However, I now have a 2 ½ year old who still has his paci. He has a very high-energy temperament and is not easy to console, but once he has his soft blanky and paci he immediately calms down. What mom doesn’t need that kind of help every now and then?
If you are concerned about prolonged pacifier use and would like more in depth tips on how to slowly decrease pacifier dependency check out Kimberley’s book, www.TheGoToMomsGuide.com.
